Eastern Dermatology and Pathology first opened in Greenville, NC in 1967. Since then, we have expanded and currently have offices in Greenville, New Bern, Morehead City, Edenton, Washington and Elizabeth City. We are pleased to offer the latest technology for treatment of medical and cosmetic conditions that affect the skin. Our board certified physicians and experienced professionals work closely to provide the comfort and care you need while assuring you that everything is being done to better your overall health and appearance. While most medical conditions require referrals from your primary care physician, most of our cosmetic offerings are performed by professionals without needing a physician referral. Acne

Acne is the most common skin disease of adolescence and is also a common prob-lem among adults. Acne appears when a pore in our skin gets clogged with dead skin cells or bacteria. The most common areas affected by acne include the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back.Although most acne usually disappears over time, some cases are more severe and can cause scarring and psychological issues.Fortunately, there are several treatment options available for acne that your dermatologist can recommend. Eczema

Also called “Atopic Dermatitis,” eczema is a common skin disease in children. Frequent during the first year of life, it appears as dry and scaly patches on the skin; most commonly found on the scalp, forehead and cheeks. Nail diseases or disorders are distinct from diseases of the skin and have their own signs and symptoms that may relate to other medical conditions. Rashes

If you have a rash, it is important to identify what kind of rash you have. A few common itchy ones include: psoriasis, poison ivy, chicken pox, scabies, eczema, hives, ringworm, and athlete's foot. The good news is that once your dermatologist identifies the type, he/she can provide the relief you need. According to the US National Institutes of Health, UV radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Artificial sources of UV radiation, such as tanning beds, can also cause skin cancer. Although more skin cancers develop after age 50, the sun’s damaging effects begin at an early age. Sunburns / Sun Damage

According to the US National Institutes of Health, UV radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Artificial sources of UV radiation, such as tanning beds, can also cause skin cancer. Although more skin cancers develop after age 50, the sun’s damaging effects begin at an early age. Sunburn is the most obvious sign that you’ve been sitting outside for too long, but sun damage occurs UNDER the skin’s surface and can con-tribute to skin cancers, including deadly melanoma. Contact your doctor’s office if you notice any of these more serious signs: fever of 102 degrees or higher, chills, severe pain, blisters that cover 20% or more of your body, dry mouth, dizziness, reduced urination.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, accounting for more than 90% of all skin cancer cases in the US. These cancers almost never spread, but can cause damage by growing and invading other surrounding tissue. Light-colored skin and sun exposure are both important factors in the development of basal cell carcinomas. If you notice any small, dome-shaped bumps often covered by small, superficial blood vessels that are often “pearly” in color, contact your dermatologist to schedule an appointment. It’s better to find out earlier than later in any type of skin cancer.

Melanoma

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer. It is not as common as other types of skin cancer, but it is the most serious. It can affect your skin only, or it may spread to your organs and bones. As with other cancers, treatment for melanoma works best when the cancer is found early. We strongly recommend regular checkups with your dermatologist to help avoid this kind of cancer. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes redness and irritation. Most people with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches called scales. It is very common and most commonly begins between ages 15 and 35. Psoriasis is not contagious and seems to be passed down through families. Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of the skin on the face that can last for many years. It often develops into a rash, with papules and pustules, and spidery red veins. Rosacea affects about 1 in 10 adults and is more common in fair-skinned women. Problems in the skin’s blood vessels, sun damage, an abnormal inflammatory reaction and/or some medications are potential causes of rosacea. Skin Tags

Some moles and most skin tags are considered benign tumors that form in areas where the skin forms crease, such as the eyelids, neck, armpit and groin. Considered benign, treatment is unnecessary, but may be removed by a dermatologist if they become irritated or present a cosmetic concern. Dermatologists may use cauterization, cryosurgery, excision or surgical ligation to remove these tags.)

Warts

Warts occur when a virus comes in contact with your skin and causes an infection. They occur more frequently in broken skin because the virus can enter the top layer of skin through scratches or cuts. Unfortunately, warts are contagious and you can spread to other body parts as well as other people. Some warts will go away without treatment, but some do not.
